Enjoy a tour of Eastern State Penitentiary, mingle with colleagues, sip on tasty libations, nibble on delicious snacks, take a selfie at Al Capone’s cell, and dance like your freedom depended on it all while taking in an often overlooked piece of Philadelphia’s rich history.
Designed by British architect John Haviland and opened in 1829, Eastern State Penitentiary was on the cutting edge of criminal rehabilitation as well as building design with advanced mechanical systems such as central heat and running water that at the time eclipsed even the White House. Eastern State would go on to serve as the model for nearly 300 prisons.
